Japanese New Year Craft: Shimekazari Making
Welcome the New Year 2026 with your own handmade Shimekazari!
Shimekazari is a traditional Japanese New Year’s decoration placed at entrances to invite the gods—especially the Toshigami (New Year deity)—into the home. It symbolizes purification and protection.
Made from sacred rice straw (shimenawa), it is adorned with auspicious items such as folded paper (shide), pine, and bitter orange (daidai).
This is a limited-time cultural experience unique to the New Year season.
