Hachimantai Aspite Line & Jukai Line
A breathtaking drive through volcanic landscapes and highland scenery, with stunning views of Mt. Iwate
Standing at 2,038 meters, Mt. Iwate is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. Its broad eastern slopes resemble Mt. Fuji, earning it the nickname “Nanbu Katafuji”. The views from the Hachimantai Aspite Line and Jukai Line are truly spectacular. The Hachimantai Aspite Line stretches approximately 27 km, crossing Hachimantai from Gozaisyo in Iwate Prefecture to Toroko Onsen in Akita Prefecture. The term “Aspite” refers to rugged volcanic terrain, and along this route, you’ll encounter numerous crater lakes of varying sizes, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape. As you ascend into the highland zone, you’ll be surrounded by the unique scenery of Aomori Todomatsu (Abies mariesii), a fir species native to Japan. The area also boasts vibrant alpine flora, including Nikko Kisuge (Hemerocallis middendorffii), Kobaikeiso (Veratrum stamineum), and Chinguruma (Geum pentapetalum), which paint the landscape with seasonal colors. At Mikaeri Pass, where the prefectural border lies, the road diverges into the Jukai Line. This route takes you through vast primeval forests, offering an immersive experience in the grandeur of untouched nature.
