Fudo Falls & Sakuramatsu Shrine

Fudo Falls & Sakuramatsu Shrine

A hidden gem where refreshing nature meets blessings for love and good fortune

Recognized as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, Fudo Falls is a breathtaking sight. The 15-meter cascade plunges straight down, sending mist into the air and shaking the tranquil surroundings with its powerful flow. Nestled within the waterfall’s midsection is a stone-carved statue of Fudo Myo-o, a guardian deity believed to offer protection and strength. In summer, the cool sound of rushing water amidst lush greenery provides a refreshing escape from the heat—an ideal spot to unwind and immerse yourself in nature’s serenity. Adjacent to the waterfall, tucked beneath a rugged cliff, stands the ancient Sakuramatsu Shrine. The shrine’s name originates from a fascinating legend: villagers once witnessed cherry blossoms blooming on a pine tree, an extraordinary event they revered as a sign of good fortune. Within the shrine grounds, you’ll find the “Enmusubi Tree”, where two maple trunks intertwine—a symbol of harmonious relationships and lasting bonds. It is said to bring blessings for love and meaningful connections. For a leisurely stroll, follow the scenic walking path along the stream. Along the way, you’ll discover a restored watermill, originally used by local villagers, adding a nostalgic charm to the journey. The entire route takes about 30 minutes, offering a peaceful retreat into nature. Despite its beauty, Fudo Falls & Sakuramatsu Shrine remain a hidden treasure, even among Iwate locals. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience, this enchanting spot is well worth a visit.
